Kali Mur (5) - Congestion • Ears • Mucus

October 12, 2026Katie Fuchs

Kali Mur helps regulate mucus production, lymphatic drainage and the body’s response to congestion.

It is the primary cell salt for thick (white) mucus, swollen glands and enlarged tonsils. When the lymphatic system becomes sluggish, fluids can accumulate and tissues may feel congested, puffy or blocked. Ear issues, sinus pressure, recurring throat complaints and lingering congestion are common signs that Kali Mur is needed. *When congestion turns to yellow/green mucus, Kali Sulph (7) is suggested.

Kali Mur is used during the middle stage of a cold, when inflammation remains but symptoms have not yet fully resolved. The ears, nose, throat and lymphatic system are areas where Kali Mur is most commonly used.

Kali Mur frequently works alongside:

Ferrum Phos (4) — early inflammation and acute symptoms

Nat Phos (10) — digestion and acid balance

Kali Sulph (7) — the next stage, when mucus turns yellow or green

Calc Fluor (1) — veins and tissue tone

Traditionally, Ferrum Phos is thought of for the first stage of a cold or inflammation, Kali Mur for the second and Kali Sulph for the third.

These salts work together when congestion, swelling or digestive complaints become recurring concerns.

Why Potassium Matters

Potassium is one of the body’s most important minerals. It helps regulate fluid balance, nerve signaling, muscle function and cellular communication.

Every heartbeat, muscle contraction and nerve impulse depends on healthy potassium balance. Because potassium is found inside virtually every cell, it plays a critical role in energy production, hydration and the body’s ability to respond to everyday stress.

Why Chloride Matters

The “Mur” in Kali Mur refers to chloride. Chloride is an essential mineral that works closely with sodium and potassium to maintain fluid balance throughout the body.

It is a key component of stomach acid, making it important for digestion and the breakdown of food. Chloride also helps support hydration, cellular function and the movement of nutrients throughout the body.

Because chloride is involved in fluid balance, digestion and mucus production, it has long been associated with healthy function of the ears, nose, throat and digestive tract. This relationship helps explain why Kali Mur is often considered for congestion, swollen glands, ear complaints and lingering mucus.
