The 12 Cell Salts

The 12 Cell Salts

The cell salt system is surprisingly simple: 12 mineral salts.

Developed by German physician Dr. Wilhelm Schuessler in the 1800s, the system was based on his belief that certain mineral salts are fundamental components of the body's tissues and that maintaining their balance is important to overall health.

Rather than using large amounts of supplemental minerals, cell salts are prepared in low homeopathic potencies and used as gentle, targeted mineral support. Each of the 12 salts has its own place within the system. Here is a simple introduction to all 12.

#1 Calc Fluor - Calcium Fluoride

elasticity + structure

Calc Fluor is considered the cell salt of elasticity and structural integrity. Within the Schuessler system, it is connected particularly with the elastic fibers of the body and with hard surfaces such as bones and tooth enamel. It is commonly considered when tissues need both strength and flexibility.

Traditionally associated with: Teeth · connective tissue · ligaments · tendons · skin · tissue elasticity

#2 Calc Phos - Calcium Phosphate

bones + growth

Calc Phos is known as an important building and restorative salt. Because calcium and phosphorus are major components of bones and teeth, Calc Phos has long been connected with periods of growth, development and recovery. It is one of the salts most commonly used during childhood and other periods of rapid growth.

Traditionally associated with: Bones · teeth · growth · development · rebuilding · recovery

#3 Calc Sulph - Calcium Sulphate

skin + healing

Calc Sulph is connected with the body's cleansing and healing processes, particularly involving the skin. Within the cell salt system, it is often considered when the body is working through lingering skin issues or when tissues are slow to clear and repair.

Traditionally associated with: Skin · tissue repair · healing · cleansing processes

#4 Ferrum Phos - Iron Phosphate

circulation + first response

Ferr Phos is considered the cell salt of oxygenation, circulation and the body's early response to physical stress. It is often described as a first-stage salt within the Schuessler system and has long been connected with the blood, circulation and the beginning stages of inflammatory processes.

Traditionally associated with: Blood · circulation · oxygenation · energy · early inflammatory response

#5 Kali Mur - Potassium Chloride

congestion + mucous membranes

Kali Mur is connected with the mucous membranes and the body's second stage of inflammatory response. It is particularly well known within the cell salt system for thick, white mucus and congestion and is also connected with glandular and digestive function.

Traditionally associated with: Mucous membranes · congestion · glands · digestion · second-stage inflammation

#6 Kali Phos - Potassium Phosphate

nerves + mental energy

Kali Phos is known as the primary nerve salt. Within the Schuessler system, it is connected with the brain and nervous system and is often considered during periods of mental strain, nervous tension or exhaustion.

Traditionally associated with: Nervous system · mental energy · stress · concentration · rest · emotional steadiness

#7 Kali Sulph - Potassium Sulphate

skin + later-stage processes

Kali Sulph is connected with the skin and mucous membranes and with later stages of the body's inflammatory processes. Within the cell salt system, it is also connected with oxygen distribution to the tissues and is often discussed alongside Ferr Phos.

Traditionally associated with: Skin · mucous membranes · circulation · later-stage inflammatory processes

#8 Mag Phos - Magnesium Phosphate

muscles + nerves

Mag Phos is considered the cell salt of muscles, nerves and relaxation. It is perhaps best known in the Schuessler system for its connection with muscular tension, cramping and spasmodic discomfort.

Traditionally associated with: Muscles · nerves · tension · cramping · spasms · relaxation

#9 Nat Mur - Sodium Chloride

fluid balance + hydration

Nat Mur is considered the primary cell salt for fluid regulation. Sodium and chloride play fundamental roles in fluid balance in ordinary human physiology. Within the cell salt system, Nat Mur is connected with how water is distributed throughout the body's tissues and is often considered for patterns involving either too much or too little moisture.

Traditionally associated with: Fluid balance · hydration · dryness · water distribution · mucous membranes

#10 Nat Phos - Sodium Phosphate

acid balance + digestion

Nat Phos is known as the acid-balancing cell salt. Within the Schuessler system, it is closely connected with digestion and acid-related patterns and is one of the best-known cell salts for digestive support.

Traditionally associated with: Digestion · acidity · sourness · digestive balance

#11 Nat Sulph - Sodium Sulphate

fluid elimination + liver

Nat Sulph is connected with the body's regulation and elimination of excess fluid. Within the cell salt system, it is also closely connected with the liver, gallbladder and digestive processes.

Traditionally associated with: Fluid regulation · liver · gallbladder · digestion · elimination

#12 Silicea - Silica

connective tissue + resilience

Silicea is considered a structural and connective-tissue salt. Within the Schuessler system, it has long been connected with skin, hair, nails and connective tissues, as well as the body's ability to repair and strengthen tissues over time.

Traditionally associated with: Connective tissue · skin · hair · nails · tissue strength · repair

Why All 12?

One of the most important things to understand about cell salts is that they don't exist in isolation. The body doesn't use calcium without phosphorus, sodium without potassium, or magnesium without countless other nutrients and processes working alongside it. Minerals function in relationship with one another.

That is part of what makes the simplicity of the original 12-salt system so compelling. Individual salts can be chosen when more targeted support is desired, while all 12 can also be used together as a simple way to incorporate the complete cell salt system into a daily routine.
